Nowcast is proud to serve HOPS with its high-precision lightning data to support their needs and projects.

Today we have the chance to interview Mr. Krešimir Mesić, responsible for the IT-application support for HOPS’s power system control, in order to gain further insight into the use of lightning data, their goals and achievements.

Nowcast: Mr. Mesić, Can you please briefly describe HOPS and its purpose and meaning for Croatia?

Krešimir Mesić:

HOPS d.o.o. is the sole electricity transmission system operator in the Republic of Croatia, and the owner of the entire Croatian transmission network (400 kV, 220kV and 110kV included voltage levels). Croatian Transmission System Operator’s general mission is electric power system operation and maintenance, electricity transmission, as well as construction and development of the electricity transmission network in order to maintain the overall security of supply with minimal costs and environmental protection.

Nowcast: May we ask you, to briefly describe your position and how you are involved in the lightning data related cases/projects?

Krešimir Mesić:

My name is Krešimir Mesić and I work in the IT-department of HOPS. I am the head of one IT-department responsible for IT-application support for power system control. I have been involved in the implementation of the lightning location data at HOPS since 2012. Today, my department is responsible for the upgrading and maintenance of that system. We also host some of the Croatian LINET sensors in our substations, Thus, we maintain them as well.

Nowcast: How does LINET data help HOPS to improve its daily operation?

Krešimir Mesić:

We use real-time LINET lightning data for alerts for system operators in case of approaching storms with lightning conditions. Real-time data with lighting locations from the LINET lightning detection system is running on a video wall in front of the system operators 24/7/365. The LINET data is also used in case of offline analysis for tracking lightning locations, number of lightning strokes affecting the transmission network, number of outages in the transmission network caused by lightning and, in case of new transmission lines, for the planning, etc.

Nowcast: What is most critical for you at HOPS when it comes to lightning data? Is it the accuracy, the speed, the reliability or something complete different?

Krešimir Mesić:

When it comes to lightning data, I would say that it is equally important to have fast availability of lighting locations (as close as possible to real-time), excellent accuracy, reliable lightning amplitude assessment and professional and steady data access.

(correlating lightning strokes with failures in the grid: LINET data enables precise and reliable decision making)

Nowcast: How happy have you been with nowcast’s LINET lightning data and why

Krešimir Mesić:

We are a LINET lightning data costumer since 2012 and we are very happy with the nowcast service. When issues or needs occurred, they were solved quickly and professional. The LINET system is reliable and location accuracy has even been further improving.

Nowcast: Can you personally recommend nowcast’s LINET data services for similar use-cases in other companies/departments/organizations and why?

Krešimir Mesić:

If someone is interested in the precise LINET data, it can be recommended by HOPS.

And hail warnings all the more so!

The car dealer hail-warning-service of AIOI/Toyota Insurance Services Germany*.

Since 2014, AIOI/Toyota Insurance Services Germany has been obtaining high-precision thunderstorm warnings from nowcast.

AIOI is not concerned with the lightning itself, but with the hail risk derived from it by nowcast and the added value for insured car dealers associated with timely hail-warnings.

Nowcast’s unique 3D-lightning-location-technology makes the high reliability of hail warnings possible and provides AIOI-insured auto dealerships with a smart and clear recommendation for action in the event of potential local hail risk.

Robert Lieb, who has been with the AIOI and Toyota Insurance Services Germany for seven years, is the manager of the Commercial Unit and is constantly looking at ways to further optimize customer service and minimize hail damage. AIOI insures its customers (car dealerships) holistically in the areas of vehicle, building, liability and environmental damage.

Today, Mr. Robert Lieb is available for an interview to explain this interesting use-case for high-precision real-time thunderstorm data in more detail.

Nowcast: Mr. Lieb, how would you describe AIOI’s focus in the auto dealership sector?

Robert Lieb:

AIOI Germany, or Toyota Insurance Services Germany, has historically been the insurer for Toyota dealerships in Germany. In the meantime, however, we have opened up our popular services to car dealerships of other manufacturers under certain circumstances and are pleased with the growing popularity.

Our multi-risk policies protect our customers against elementary and existential damage and thus cover a major risk for car dealerships. In addition to the actual settlement of claims, a special focus is placed on our loss prevention services.

Because even if the insurance company can cover a concrete financial loss that has occurred, there are still portions of the loss that cannot be covered by the insurance company, such as image damage, loss of time, or even simply value-reducing portions of a loss that a car dealership is left with.

That’s why we put a lot of effort into optimizing our prevention offerings. One important component is nowcast’s hail-warning-service, because hail is a very high danger for car dealerships.

Nowcast: How did the collaboration between AIOI and nowcast originally come about?

Robert Lieb:

In 2013, the German insurance industry faced one of the worst hail years in a long time. As a direct consequence of this “hail year,” we at AIOI put hail prevention at the top of our list of priorities.

While we were already covered with a thunderstorm warning service from another vendor, the accuracy and reliability of that service just wasn’t good enough.

We set out to find an alternative that could deliver the quality and precision we needed, and came across nowcast. As an international company based in Munich and an established and highly acclaimed lightning data provider to respectable companies and government services, nowcast appeared to be a highly attractive provider of such services.

It quickly became clear that nowcast’s sophisticated, patented technology would enable the accuracy and reliability needed so that hail warnings would not cause displeasure among car dealerships due to inflationary frequency, bringing a whole new level of credibility to this service offering.

Nowcast: How do you describe the objective of nowcast’s hail-warning-service for your customers?

Robert Lieb:

Our objective as an insurer is clear: We want to send our car dealers a precise hail warning that allows them to protect as many vehicles as possible. The added value for the dealers lies not only in a lower loss ratio, but also and especially in high customer satisfaction and image impact. Just think how disappointed you would be, if the delivery of your new car was announced for tomorrow and this joyful event was then massively spoiled by hail damage. Nowcast’s hail warnings enable car dealerships to store and protect particularly expensive vehicles or those about to be delivered in good time.

Nowcast: Can you also present the service from a number’s perspective?

Robert Lieb:

Perhaps this much: on average, hail damage with normal hail intensity costs the insurance company about 1500-2500 € per car (not including the damage to the dealer such as depreciation, etc.).

If a medium-sized dealer with e.g. 50 vehicles manages to protect 20% of his vehicles in case of a hail event by our timely nowcast hail warning, this quickly results in approx. 15,000-20,000 € savings for the insurance company due to hail damage not occurring. And the dealer himself saves about 250 to 500 € depreciation per vehicle and also parts of the deductible. Thus, for himself a good four to five figure amount in total. In addition, there is the excellent customer service, the avoided image damage as well as saved trouble and time.

Nowcast: What makes nowcast’s hail-warning-service so effective?

Robert Lieb:

Our former provider of thunderstorm warnings was unable to offer warnings of the quality and accuracy required to reduce them to an absolute minimum. After all, if such an alert is transmitted too often without justification, such a service all too quickly degenerates into a burden, is ignored and misses the target.

With nowcast, credibility could be brought back into the hail warning service and raised to a whole new level.

Different warning levels provide the car dealer with an optimal basis for decision-making without having to make meteorological assessments and interpretations himself. Fast, simple and precise.

Nowcast: How would you rate the cooperation with Nowcast?

Robert Lieb:

With the best of my knowledge and conscience! In my view, Nowcast offers innovative solutions, made in Germany, with a strong cost-benefit ratio!

The hail-warning-service we use is an ideal self-runner with high benefits for us and our customers.

—–

Today we have the pleasure to conduct an interview with our brand-new Partner Vento Maritime and its COO Hans Christian Hansen.

Hans Christian is a weather forecaster and looks back to more than 15 years of experience in the Weather industry and weather services. He’s an expert in maritime forecasting and has founded Vento Maritime in 2017 together with his business-partner Carsten Kofoed.

Dear Hans Christian, could you please briefly describe the Services of Vento Maritime and how you founded the company together with your business-partner Carsten Kofoed?

HCH: Overall, we offer three kinds of services: Offshore Weather Service, Strategic Weather Routing and MetOcean Consultancy.

The Offshore Weather Service is tailor made for the offshore industry and is based on our long experience in the business. In fact, all our various services are tailor made to fulfil the needs of the offshore wind industry, partly thanks to the Danish company Ørsted, a great and loyal collaboration partner, when designing and adjusting the services. We always strive to meet our client’s needs, and therefore often make custom made products just for them.

The MetOcean forecast data is based on high-resolution models from our partner, the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). All the different MetOcean parameters are displayed on a web portal that is hosted and provided by DMI. With this service, detailed high-quality MetOcean forecast data are available for specific locations, requested by our clients, and the data are verified and validated on a regular basis in order to improve forecast accuracy.

Our Site Forecasts and Transit Forecasts are carefully prepared written forecasts, including the synoptic situation in terms of lows, highs and fronts, comments regarding confidence level of the MetOcean forecasts and thus, how reliable the displayed forecast data is.

Remarks regarding relevant weather conditions, according to the client’s operation, or transit criteria and therefore comments on potential weather windows are also included.

©Adobe Stock

This kind of forecast is beneficial both for sites like an Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) or a vessel in transit. The duty marine forecaster will be up to date with the operational progress and will adjust the written comments accordingly – we believe that value is created in close dialogue between the client and the duty forecaster.

Weather forecasts always come with a degree of uncertainty. The problem for clients is to know how big that uncertainty is in a given situation. Just how predictable are the atmosphere and the oceans in a particular place at a particular time? We help our clients to evaluate this.

With our Lightning Alert Service, we actively monitor for approaching thunderstorms and lightning strikes, and make every effort to provide an alert two hours in advance before a high risk of lightning occurs.

The Strategic Weather Routing is route optimisation for to the global merchant fleet. The aim of our service is to ensure safe ocean crossings, enhanced to save fuel and reduce CO2 emissions. Our route suggestions are adjusted by considering all relevant MetOcean parameters and are evaluated strategically, in accordance with projected weather developments 10-15 days ahead. We provide both full voyage service and on demand routing service for ad hoc route advice.

In our MetOcean Consultancy, we offer customised reports, where the result can be used for optimum planning of an upcoming offshore operation, or for evaluating a possible operation prior to a tendering process for a project.

We provide tailor-made MetOcean analyses with detailed information about what conditions to expect, including frequency and extremes. Analyses are typically based on planned/tentative operational weather criteria, which gives precise statistical results of what time of year an operation best is carried out. Furthermore, the expected average duration of completion of the operation is presented, along with worst-case and best-case scenarios.

We founded Vento Maritime in January 2017 after we both quit our job in a closing commercial maritime department at the Danish Meteorological Institute. We both wanted to continue in the maritime business providing weather related services.
However, for me it was with a bit of fear and anxiety to quit a job after 12 years working for the state – and now I had to earn my own salary. As a father to three boys and with a wife, a house, a car etc. you’ll have to think twice compared to when I was in my twenties.
Fortunately, we were able to gain customers within the first months and has been providing daily service since Q2 2017.

Lightning data seems to be an important factor for your services. May I ask you to give a short description of how it is used and how it serves your customers?

HCH: Our Lightning Alert Service enables our clients to launch the necessary precautions and improve the safety at sea. The operational procedures for this service are developed in close cooperation with Ørsted’s Danish OWFs.

Our service setup does not only take detected lightning strikes into account. Instead, our trained marine meteorologists monitor and analyses the lightning potential of near future developing thunderstorms and communicate the risk to the client both by phone and email as swiftly as possible. Our aim is to improve safety whilst also optimising the use of weather windows.

For planning, we issue our Lightning Risk Matrix. The matrix displays a prediction of the likelihood of lightning for every hour two days in advance – with red, yellow and green colours for high, medium and low risk respectively. It’s made after a thorough analysis of the weather development in the coming days, to give the best possible evaluation, hour by hour, of the lightning risk level expected in the area.

Our clients often tell us that they feel we are really watching their back and that they value the possibility of talking with a professional marine forecaster during these occasions.

In order to offer the most accurate services to your customers you have recently compared different sources for lightning data and nowcast was your choice after your careful internal analysis of the different providers. Can you tell us some bits about the process?

HCH: We shortlisted two companies providing lightning data and associated software – the two companies were nowcast and a US-company. Then we tested their data and platform for a 14-day period in late summer along with our Lightning Alert Service for our clients. We also compared the lightning data with three publicly available lightning data systems – a German lightning detection system and the national lightning detection systems in the UK and Denmark.

Very quickly we could see the difference in the lightning data quality. When we monitor the formation and lifecycle of thunderstorms, we use weather radar, satellite images, high-resolution forecast etc. We therefore have a rather good indication for when and where lightning detections are likely and when they are false detections. During the comparison we saw several occasions where the US-company failed to detect any lightning at all in an evolving thunderstorm and in other occasions false detected lightning occurred in a large distance from any thunderstorm.

Regarding the speed, we often saw the nowcast software LINET View display detections several minutes before the other systems. Speed is also an important parameter for us but not as important as the ability to detect as many lightning as possible.

Besides of this, the user experience of LINET View was also significantly better than the other platform. Email or SMS alerts for self-made areas were very easy to setup and worked very stable. All in all, the nowcast solution was much better and gave more value for the money. We will therefore use the LINET View solution from Spring 2021.

Vento Maritime serves demanding customers offshore. How do the customer’s needs differ from those of onshore customers and what are the big challenges?

HCH: In the wind industry you can easily raise the cost by a factor ten if you go from onshore to offshore. Onshore, technicians going to a wind turbine for maintenance can just take a van but offshore you have to sail or fly by helicopter. This is of course much more expensive, and planning is thus mandatory. Offshore, you have to take the weather conditions into account as strong winds will be a showstopper for sailing. The reason for this is that strong winds build up waves to a height that sometimes is too high for the Crew Transfer Vessels or the larger Service Operation Vessels. It is of course not beneficial to sail from a harbour early morning just to realize that the waves are too high when you arrive in an offshore wind farm after 1-2 hours – and then have to sail all the way back again.

Another weather parameter that can be a showstopper are thunderstorms. In the Offshore Wind industry, it is generally not accepted that technicians work in or on a wind turbine if there is a high risk of lightning in the area. This is a challenge we help our clients with based on our Lightning Alert Service. Besides of alerting them 1-2 hours before high risk of lightning we also help them plan the next day based on the risk of lightning. This is especially important in the summer season, where you often can have weaker winds and lower waves, but much more frequent forming thunderstorms.

Even more demanding is providing weather service for the construction of a new OWF as the installation vessels for installing foundations and wind turbines are extremely expensive. The rent is normally 100-200.000 EUR – daily! It is therefore crucial to help the client finding every workable weather window in order to get the job done as quickly as possible within the safety margins.

What is most important for you and Vento Maritime, when it comes to working with partners and suppliers?

HCH: It must be trust. If you can’t trust your partner or supplier then you should consider finding a substitute you can trust.

How have you been handling the COVID-19 pandemic?

HCH: Luckily, our clients have been working every day during the pandemic – and the weather has of course continued unaffected. We have therefore not had any clients cancelling our service. Operationally, we have been working partly from home and partly from our office. Fortunately, we had the technical setup already – both for backup and also for the shifts in the weekend. You can say that we went in weekend-mode from March 11th when the Danish government made a national lockdown. What has affected us most is the very limited physical events where we previously used to be networking with clients and potential customers.

Last but certainly not least: What do you personally like best about your job and the mission you are on with Vento Maritime?

HCH: Being part of the Green Transition. The Offshore Wind industry will most likely grow exponentially – and we are a tiny piece of this great adventure. That is one of the best things working in Vento Maritime – and of course also due to my childish fascination of the weather. Thunderstorms are just cool! …and also dangerous. That’s one of the reasons for why nowcast and Vento Maritime exists.

Thank you very much Hans Christian! We look forward to grow and flourish together as partners with you and the complete Vento Maritime-Crew!

I look forward to our cooperation and to see what we can achieve together.

Neil Durham is the founder and CEO of Wagtech Projects, with over 30 years of experience in the business. Today we have the pleasure to interview him on his partnership with Nowcast.

Dear Neil, can you briefly describe the business of Wagtech and your main focus area?

Thank you that is an interesting question, we consider ourselves manufacturers and solution providers in the field of portable waste water analysis, environmental testing, agronomy, hydromet solutions as well as materials testing, through products and consulting services. We offer a range of mobile laboratories used to validate testing at the source. Our ASMS platform allows customers to receive and send real time results while still being able to preserving the integrity of the data.

Our success has been driven by customers, customer service and our growth strategies, through regional offices, stocking centres, local distributors and sales agents that are trained to carry installations, commissioning, product training and after sales service and support. This allows us to supply large numbers of products, reagents and consumables within hours of an order being placed.

Wagtech and Nowcast have started out with a very successful UNDP-project in Malawi 2019. May we ask you to give just a short description of the project from your perspective?

Malawi’s death rate by lightning is estimated to be 16 times higher than that of other countries in southern Africa. Therefore, a lightning detection technology capable of delivering real-time insights into thunderstorm activities was required, within the scope of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) “Saving Lives and Protecting Agriculture-based Livelihoods in Malawi”. Scaling up the use of modernized climate information and early warning systems, they generated a procurement idea as a way of mitigating this problem. With our presence in Malawi through our local office, I approached Nowcast GmbH as part of the UBIMET Group, to jointly work together to provide the required services for supply and installation of a lightning detection system in Malawi.

The lightning detection software was mainly to provide sensor met-data management, real-time lightning data collection and processing, assimilation, validation, location, long term activation, product generation and redistribution, up to the weather monitoring, nowcasting, detection of hazardous situations and early warnings.

What else was important for the Malawi Lightning detection project?

Factory training conducted at the Nowcast premises for nominated officers of the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS- Malawi) so as to equip them with the skills on how to read and interpret the system.

The system provides the following products:

Lightning data for the individual flashes

Lightning data statistics for the particular station / region

Storm cells data as a result of the raw lightning data clustering

Location of individual strokes in time and space

Storm cells in form of the georeferenced polygons

Storm cell nowcasting

Tracking in real time

After sales service, technical support

When collaborating with industry partners, what is most important for you?

Most important is the product and industry knowledge. The partners should be leaders in their field with great after sales service and reliable and fast technical support.

However, we are looking for partners that consider joint venture projects as important as selling to direct end users: Knowing that people buy from people and want to be treated right.

Among other parts of the world, Wagtech has extensive experience all over Africa? What do you like most about your work there?

Africa is the world’s second-largest continent, it covers 6% of the earth’s total surface area with 1.3 billion people, and it accounts for about 16% of the world’s human population.

Africa has a wide range of natural resources, the continent is the least wealthy per capita, mostly due to geographic impediments, undemocratic rules and deleterious policies. Despite this low concentration of wealth, recent economic expansion and the large and young population: Africa is an important economic market in the broader global context.

With 34 countries that make up the African continent, population in 2018 at 1.3 Billion, 2000 known native languages, Africa is such a manifold, beautiful and great place to be.

What I personally love most about Africa: The diversity of people, friendliness, the hunger to learn, to explore and the willingness for personal growth. The people in all countries that we visit, make me want to come back and share my experiences – I love Africa!

Looking back to the on-going partnership with Nowcast, how would you best describe the collaboration so far?

Fantastic! Not only are we representing a world leader in lightning detection, we also have a great relationship in which all projects are dealt with on its own merits. Each project is as important to Nowcast as it is to Wagtech Projects. Great team work.

Thank you, Neil! Let’s keep growing together with our mutual friends and customers!

Absolutely! That’s the spirit of this partnership with Nowcast.

Another example of ultra-precise lightning detection

Nowcast LINET, the renown high-precision lightning detection system with best-in-class location accuracy and excellent detection efficiency (measuring even strokes below 2 kA), delivered another impressive example of its capability.

On the 7th of September 2020, one of the 43 lamps on the famous new Genova San Giorgio bridge in Genoa, Italy was hit by a lightning strike.

This lightning event was detected and located with extraordinary precision by nowcast’s LINET Lightning Detection Network, that identified the lightning as an upward cloud-to-ground stroke with a peak current of 14.7 kA at 02:49 UTC.

Background information about the bridge:

14th of August, 2018 – this day will be remembered by many people in Genoa, Italy.

On this date, a part of the highway viaduct “Polcevera” (also referred to as the “Morandi Bridge”) right in the city collapsed and claimed 43 lives.

The bridge connected the eastern and western part of the city and was an important element of the traffic route.

However, the city overcame the tragedy and rebuilt the bridge, which was finalized on 28th of April 2020 and was given the name Genova San Giorgio.

Croatia Control Ltd. is the ATC-Agency in Croatia. Their mission is ensuring air traffic safety to the highest standards and to provide air navigation services to keep the air traffic above Croatia and Europe safe and efficient.

Since 2009 nowcast has been winning the contracts for providing the lightning data and has regularly been the only tenderer able to meet our requirements. Stjepko Jančijev

Today we have the pleasure to conduct an interview with Stjepko Jančijev, Specialist in weather forecasting technology at Croatia Control Ltd. (CCL), Croatia.

Dear Mr. Jančijev, at CCL, the Air Navigation Service Provider for Croatia, you work at the Aeronautical Meteorology Service (MET). Can you briefly explain your role and responsibility?

As a MET Operations Support Specialist, my main role is to provide expert, regulatory and technical support to operational forecasters. My responsibilities include project management, improving the forecasting system, configuring Visual Weather (forecaster workstations), overviewing the data flow, developing and maintaining the public web page met.crocontrol.hr, as well as handling several contracts with our data suppliers, including nowcast GmbH.

CCL has been using the high-precision lightning data and nowcast’s LINET view application since 2009.
Can you explain how you use the data within your control software and in what cases you use the LINET view application?

CCL uses the data provided by Nowcast in several ways. Forecasters access the lightning data both via our Visual Weather system and the LINET view application and use it to produce warnings, as well as for the control of regular forecasts. Meteorological observers mostly use the LINET view application which helps them to make correct thunderstorm observations. We also plan on ingesting the lightning data into our Automatic Weather Observation Stations (AWOS). Every minute, our system also generates the “MET Sandwich”, an image with the overlapping layers of satellite and lightning data, and transmits it to the air traffic control database. Our air traffic controllers find this product very informative and intuitive for a quick meteorological assessment.

Can you tell us why CCL opted for nowcast data?

I would say that the main reason is that Nowcast has proved to be capable of providing us with reliable and timely data, as well as the user-friendly web page for displaying it.
Our cooperation had started before I took this position, so I only know it second hand. Since 2009 Nowcast has been winning the contracts for providing the lightning data and has regularly been the only tenderer able to meet our requirements. So for us, the decision was always easy.
Since Nowcast provides high-quality data at the best price, we have renewed the contract every year ever since.

Nowcast is the only provider of large-area lightning data able to deliver the emission height of IC-strokes over the complete covered area. How can this IC-height-information help you at CCL or ATCs in general?

Although the information about the height of IC-strokes and their distribution can be very useful in nowcasting, CCL does not use this data yet. We are primarily oriented to aviation, and airplanes tend to avoid the cumulonimbus clouds altogether. Our plan to obtain a nowcasting system and to ingest all the available data in it, including the vertical distribution of IC-strokes, was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to resume it when the situation goes back to normal.

How does CCL use the LINET lightning data and/or LINET view to dispatch timely warnings and who do you dispatch warnings to?

CCL dispatches timely warnings and forecasts to various aviation users (the Area Control Center, aerodrome operators, general aviation users, the Croatian Army, the Police, etc.), as well as the aviation community in general. Of course, to generate accurate warnings and forecasts, we need accurate and timely data, and Nowcast provides us with such lightning data. Our users have their own specific interests which do not always overlap. For example, at our Area Control Center, we use Nowcast data to track big convection systems which may enter Zagreb FIR (Croatian airspace) and for the detection of convection initialization inside the FIR. For aerodromes, we track the movement of cells around airports and issue warnings to aerodromes if needed. Low-flying aircraft are very vulnerable to hazardous weather, and thunderstorms are particularly dangerous because they cause various dangerous phenomena. Therefore we use the Nowcast lightning data to closely monitor the meteorological situation in Zagreb FIR and its surroundings.

Dear Mr. Jančijev, thank you very much for this interview. We wish you all the best and look forward to our further relation!

You are welcome, it has been my pleasure. I am looking forward to our future cooperation.

Munich, September 05, 2020 – In the summer of 2020, the lightning monitoring network of the renowned Munich-based lightning detection company nowcast registered exactly 2,659,493 lightning discharges throughout Germany, 732,199 of them with a current intensity of at least 5 kA. This is the lowest value since the beginning of modern lightning detection. The state with the highest number of lightning discharges was Bavaria, the smallest state of the Federal Republic of Germany, Bremen, is in last place. Since 2006, the experts have been using their high-precision lightning detection system LINET (Lightning Detection Network) to record ground and cloud lightning in large parts of the world and also supply their data to the DWD. nowcast is the lightning specialist of the UBIMET Group.

From June 1 to August 31, nowcast’s high-precision lightning measurement system registered exactly 2,659,493 lightning discharges (cloud and earth lightning) all over Germany, 732,199 of them with a current of at least 5 kA. This value represents the lowest value since the start of the measurement. This summer there were a good 500,000 lightning discharges less than in the summer of the previous year. Compared to the average from 2009 to 2019, less than half of the usual number of lightning discharges was recorded this summer. The second lowest value is from summer 2018, when about 868,500 lightnings with a current of at least 5 kA were detected, so we have experienced the two weakest thunderstorm seasons within the last three years. “Especially in July, there were exceptionally few thunderstorms this year. In the normally thunderiest month of the year, for example in Saarland, not a single lightning was detected” says Richard Fellner, CEO of nowcast. Germany-wide it thunderstormed however nevertheless on 73 of 92 days somewhere in the federal territory: “While there were only 12 days with lightning discharges in Hamburg, there were 61 in Bavaria”, so the expert.

Top performer Bavaria

With exactly 742,815 lightning discharges, Bavaria, as so often, clearly leads the federal state ranking, followed in second place by Lower Saxony with 317,046 lightning discharges. Baden-Württemberg completes the podium with around 316,484 lightning discharges. By contrast, considerably fewer thunderstorms were registered last summer in the middle and far north: Schleswig-Holstein, for example, recorded only 39,733 lightning discharges, the smallest federal state, Bremen, only 1,054.

In terms of lightning density, Bavaria is also in first place with about 10.5 lightnings per km², followed by Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Brandenburg with about 8 lightnings per km². In last place are Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen with about 2.5 lightnings per km² and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Hesse with about 4 lightnings per km².

Strongest lightning in Bavaria

The force of lightning is indicated by the current in the unit Ampere. The strongest lightning in the country was measured in Bavaria in the district of Roth: “The front-runner is a discharge of around 402 kA in Thalmässing on the night of July 2,” the expert said. “In a very short time, a current intensity 25,000 times higher than that available in a standard household socket with 16 amperes was reached.

Storm on June 13

By far the most stormy day of the summer was June 13, when about 450,000 lightning discharges were recorded, 133,000 of them in Brandenburg and 110,000 in Lower Saxony alone. In second and third place, respectively, came June 26 with 160,000 lightning discharges and August 11 with 146,000. This year’s thunderstorms were mainly responsible for local heavy rain and flooding, for example, in Bottmersdorf (Saxony-Anhalt) on June 13, 100 L/m² of rain fell in less than 5 hours. Similarly large amounts of rain of more than 80 L/m² in two hours were recorded in Nattheim (Baden-Württemberg) on August 2 or in Twist (Lower Saxony) on August 14. Large hail with a diameter of >3 cm was only sporadic, such as locally on June 13 in Brandenburg. Hurricane gusts were also measured only sporadically, the highest peak being 130 km/h in Chieming on June 28.

The special thing about nowcast

The lightning location system LINET, developed at the Ludwig-Maximillians-University in Munich and made famous by its patented 3D algorithm, has become a premium supplier in its sector within a very short time. Due to the continuous development of the technology, the precision with which nowcast can locate lightning and thunderstorms is unique. The lightning measurement is generally based on the detection of electromagnetic waves. As soon as a certain intensity is exceeded, the measuring system registers the lightning. A lightning is detected by several sensors and a mathematical algorithm calculates the location based on the reported data with an average accuracy of 75 meters. In Germany nowcast records its lightning data with 30 sensors, Europe-wide with more than 170 and worldwide with more than 600 sensors.
6 reasons highlighting the value of professional lightning data

Whenever a general overview of a thunderstorm situation is required, let us tell you: don’t pay for it – it’s available for free! If you want to know if there currently is lightning activity around e.g. greater London, you can check that on several free weather apps etc.

However, there are many professional use-cases that call for the highest precision in detection accuracy as well as for the most reliable short-term prediction (so-called ‘nowcasting’) of the lightning situation within the next 10 to 60 minutes.

These are the cases where every little bit in accuracy counts. Superficial thunderstorm information is out of place. Here, every single stroke of a lightning burst (or lightning flash = what can be observed with the bare eye) is of interest, as one stroke can, for instance, be the cause for failure in a power transmission-line.

Professional lightning data is especially vital for

Energy providers

Aviation

Insurance companies

National weather services

Private weather services

Mining and drilling operations

Outdoor events /sports events

Scientific institutions

Fire fighters

Telecommunication and other infrastructure providers

The Military

Only based on the highest precision data, meaningful instant lightning-related decision support is of help to people in charge of safety and/or efficiency of operations and situations in various public and private entities, departments or companies.

As lightning is not only a very dangerous but also spontaneous and fast-moving atmospheric event, life-saving and/or operational decisions should be subject to real-time and most exact information.

So, here are 6 major reasons to go with the highest possible quality in lightning data only:

1) Responsibility

Obviously, if you are in charge of a weather-related business, operation or safety of any kind, you probably want to make your decisions based on the best possible solutions

2) Reliability

Data for decision making needs to be of highest reliability, as the decision may affect many people/situations in very different ways. Therefore, the basis for such decisions is of utmost importance and will probably be questioned afterwards.

3) Avoiding Aversion

We all know it from car-burglar-alarms: If the sound goes off way too often, people will get annoyed and will just ignore it.

In order to have people listen and comply with important warnings like lightning-alerts, there must not be significant false alarms. Again: only with the highest and most reliable data quality, an aversion-effect can be best avoided.

4) The Chain of Data

Lightning data will often be further integrated into and modelled in other systems/calculations etc. Consequently, the quality of such further modelling etc. depends on the initial quality of the input data. Ergo: The better the input, the better the output.

5) Savings

The aim of all such decision making is savings. Whether it is lives, costs, time or something else: precision and reliability are essential.

6) Performance

Finally, every system and operation is measured by its performance. Lightning detection or lightning data is no exception here. The Performance of such systems and the produced data is evaluated mainly by four KPIs, namely:

Location Accuracy (precision of stroke locations)

Detection Efficiency (number of captured strokes)

Reliability/Validity (number of false detections or missed detections)

Speed/Uptime (Availability of the system and the produced data)

In view of these six major reasons, it becomes instantly clear where the differences between general thunderstorm information and ultra-precise, professional lightning detection lie. For anyone in charge of weather and/or specifically lightning-affected operations and associated decision making, precise stroke data and particularly a reliable short-term forecasting is the crucial basis for professional and confident assessment.

MicroStep-MIS has been operating in the area of environmental monitoring since 1993. Since then, MicroStep-MIS has established itself as an accepted and respected worldwide player in the field.

Jozef Omelka is the Founder, Managing Director and Co-Owner of MicroStep-MIS with decades of experience in the field of international projects.

„In this partnership, we clearly see the important synergies for a win-win situation“ Jozef Omelka, Founder & Managing Director of MicroStep-MIS

Today we have the pleasure to interview him on his long-term partnership with nowcast.

Jozef, your company has taken the opportunity to become a nowcast-partner in 2014. Can you briefly describe the main reasons that motivated you to join forces and add nowcast-products to your portfolio?

First of all, I would like to stress I am proud that our company belongs among nowcast partners. I had When high-quality forces join, success and customer satisfaction can multiply learned about some years ago, but seriously I started to consider options of possible co-operation in 2013 or 2014, when there was a tender for delivery of lightning detection system (LDS) in the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute (SHMU) which you won. Since then I can hear only good references about functionality and reliability of your system as well as all-over co-operation with nowcast. This knowledge has supported my interest in cooperating with you to such an extent that I am happily doing this interview today!

In what way are nowcast-products complementary to your own products and what is the major value for your customers?

Our company is specialized in monitoring and information systems, our portfolio is of a very wide scope and one of few things we are not producing is the lightning detection system. Thus, we can respond to customer requirements for the supply of LDS, your system is fully compatible with our software and it can be easily integrated into our meteorological and forecasting systems. The major value for our customers is the complexity of products and services we can supply.

What are the common use-cases at your customers when it comes to lightning detection integration?

In fact, so far, we do have integrated nowcast’s LINET LDS into one of our Airport Weather Observing Systems. LINET data together with the radar data, and data from other remote and local sources enable to provide a complex information on weather conditions for air raffic control. The functionality of this system confirms the right choice of particular components integrated into the system and is a good reference for other potential clients.

When collaborating with partners, what is most important to you?

If we want to succeed in tough competition, we need reliable partners producing reliable high-quality products, partners keeping word and willing to work together towards solution that ultimately leads to meeting customer requirements. It is, of course, an advantage, when the business partners understand each other also from a human point of view. It simplifies mutual communication and even complicated issues are easier to be solved in a friendly environment.

“If we want to succeed in tough competition, we need reliable partners producing reliable high-quality products, partners keeping word and willing to work together …”

You and your company have extensive experience in international weather-tech-projects. How important is partnering with manufacturers and specialized solution-providers for you?

We are suppliers of complex systems but not producers of all components used in the systems. Partnership is thus crucial for us, only with reliable partners providing top quality products and services can we win in hard international competition.

Looking back to the several years partnership with nowcast, how would you best describe the collaboration over the years?

I think that feelings are sometimes more important in assessing the quality of cooperation than the exact number of years of cooperation. And that’s exactly how I see our co-operation. This may be influenced by the fact that the way our companies operate is similar in many ways, and the values you apply in management are very similar to mine. I am convinced that the coming years will allow us to expand our cooperation on the basis of the principles I have set out in my answers above.

Thank you Jozef!

In case you are planning for a new lightning detection network: There are major differentiators between technologies but also more hidden details that affect both quality and overall costs.

This article is meant to supply you with the five most relevant aspects we’ ve learned to keep an eye on in many professional lightning detection projects around the globe. Lightning is a complex weather phenomenon. When it comes to professional lightning detection, it’ s important to differ between scientific research needs and regular commercial use-cases like protection measures, weather reports or insurance claim handling. The good news: A great large-area network can be installed at a reasonable price! The challenge: Looks can be deceiving when marketing jargon comes into play.

We did our best to bring it down to #5 essentials, that give you a good overall guidance.

Let’ s get started:

#1 Excellent hardware quality as a starting point

In order to capture accurate and reliable lightning data, sensitive, precise and rugged hardware is the starting point. Excellent hardware may have its price, but by using smart methods and clever technology one can avoid complexity. Therefor, at nowcast we found a great way to rely on VLF-technology only – precisely engineered and manufactured in Germany, based on up-to-date science. Without the need for poor quality direction finding or very expensive and more delicate VHF-tech.

#2 Proven Localization Accuracy (LA)

A most important and also delicate aspect: How close does the detected stroke-location come to the true hit-point of a stroke? One’ s for sure: Everyone will tell you about high LA. We simply recommend to ask for real proof as well as customer references.

Charts show detected strokes by nowcast that demonstrably hit towers (center of grids). Nearly all detected trokes have a deviation from the true hit-point of less than 100 m)

#3 Detection Efficiency (DE) in kA and not as a percentage

Detection Efficiency is tricky. You will probably come across percentage-values when checking the capabilities of a system. Why is that misleading? Because no one knows the true number of all strokes (especially intra-cloud strokes). Consequently, a percentage-value (bases on the 100 % that no one knows) makes just no sense, but looks nice in marketing does it? At nowcast we prefer to deal with facts. Therefore, we give you the DE in kA, meaning we tell you how far down (in terms of electric current of a stroke) our system is able to detect. This way you are fully aware of what you can expect and what the weakest strokes detected will be. This allows a reliable and meaningful assessment.

Chart indicates the amount of detected strokes of a lightning event per kA by nowcasts LINET technology.

Important feature: At nowcast, we do not only detect and discriminate IC-strokes (Intra-Cloud) from CG-strokes (Cloud-to-Ground), we also deliver the emission-height of IC without VHF-technology.

3D-detection of IC-strokes with nowcast’s patented algorithm.
