German Air Traffic Control (DFS)

The German Airtraffic Control (DFS), located in Langen is the offical ATC-agency for Germany. It is organized as a privat company, fully owned by the Federal Republic of Germany.

Civial and military air traffic controllers work hand-in-hand at DFS. Since 1993 DFS is in charge of both civil aviation as well as military air traffic (in freedom times). Execptions built the military airports.

Since 2006, DFS continuously sources all nowcast high-precision lightning detection data over the German Weather Service (DWD). This way, the ultra-precise LINET data are used at 16 international airports in Germany as exclusive lightning-data and thus built the high-quality basis for the thunderstorm-related decision making of the DFS experts.

At Munich Airport, three additional integrated field-mills are used.

Meteocat – Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC)

The official Weather Service of the Spanish Province of Catalonia (SMC) is organized as a public limited company and directly reports to the Ministry for territory and sustainability of Catalonia in Barcelona.

As such, SMC is also a member of the European Meteorological Society (EMS).

Since 2007 Meteocat (SMC) sources its high-precision lightning detection data from nowcast in cooperation with the Polytechnical University of Catalonia.

SMC describes nowcast’s LINET data as excellent Total Lightning Data of highest reliability, used for weather observation and prognosis.

Weather Service of Slovakia SHMU

Slovenský Hydrometeorologický Ústav (SHMU) is the official national weather service of Slovakia and dates back to 1969. The Department is a subdevision of the national Ministry of the Environment. Its tasks comprise the dispatch of weatherinformation and prognosis as well as severe weather warnings.

Since 2011 SHMU receives the high-precion LINET lightning detection data from nowcast.

Due to the convincing quality of the data, SHMU acquired its own autonomous LINET lightning detection network in 2014.

In particular, the high Detection Efficiency, the unique Location Accuracy as well as the patented 3D-detection functionality (Cloud-to-Ground and Intra-Cloud lightning incl. emission-height-information) are the major reasons for the high customer satisfaction of SHMU

Malawi’ s lightning-induced mortality is 16 times higher compared to similar regions in Southern Africa. Clearly, a capable technology able to deliver precise real-time insights into thunderstorm activities is most helpful. Nowcasts’ LINET system was procured via a UNDP-Tender in 2019 as a fundamental game changer to Malawi’s lightning-related safety measures.

With a focus on rugged quality, autonomous power-supply and excellent data-quality the country-wide detection network was set up on only a few weeks’ time with the support of nowcast’ s local installation partner and the dedicated Team of Malawi’s Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services.

German Meteorological Service (DWD)

Since 2006 nowcast has been the official supplier of the German Meteorological Service (DWD). Only nowcast was able to meet the demanding requirements of the biggest and most important weather service in Europe and has since been confirmed as supplier of lightning data many times.

”For the German Meteorological Service (DWD), the precise and comprehensive lightning data provided by nowcast form an essential information source for extremely short-term forecasting and issuing storm warnings.
The precise information is required for aeronautical meteorological services and creating climatological expert opinions.“
